CINCINNATI, Ohio – The powerplay struck twice and the Bloomington Bison extended their season-opening-point-streak to seven games in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones at Heritage Bank Center on Saturday evening.
After finishing Friday’s game in a shootout and driving to Cincinnati overnight, the Bison allowed 12 shots on goal during the first period against the Cyclones and went into the second period down 1-0 on the scoreboard. Bloomington’s penalty kill went 1-for-1 in the first but the powerplay was scoreless on two attempts in the frame.
Penalties would prove costly in the second and third stanzas, and after former Bison Sahil Panwar was called for a double-minor high-sticking penalty, Bloomington took control. At 7:55, Raivis Ansons potted his second goal of the season to tie the game from Vladislav Kamenev and Grant Porter. On the second half of the double-minor, Lou-Felix Denis rifled in his first of the season with a one-timed shot from Deni Goure and Tyler Rubin to put Bloomington up 2-1 going into the third period.
Eighty seconds into the final regulation frame, the Bison were called for tripping, and Panwar tied the game for Cincinnati at 2:51. Bloomington remained on its proverbial heels, and surrendered a third goal at 11:17 to fall behind 3-2. Porter answered with help from Seung Jae Lee to tie the game again with just over five minutes remaining, and the teams headed to overtime.
After the Bison charged into Cincinnati territory on an odd-man rush and lost possession of the puck, the Cyclones scored at the other end to steal back the win within the first minute and a half of overtime. Bloomington remains one of just two teams in the ECHL without a regulation loss, and is now one point behind Cincinnati, who has played two more games, ahead of a rematch between the clubs at Grossinger Motors Arena next Saturday, November 14.
The Bloomington Bison return home on Saturday, November 14 when they will be celebrating Teacher Appreciation Night featuring a special ticket offer for local educators!
