BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Grant Porter, Michael Milne and Seung Jae Lee each recorded multi-point games and the Bloomington Bison improved to 4-0 on the season to take first place in the Western Conference after a 4-2 victory over the Indy Fuel on Friday night at Grossinger Motors Arena.
Bloomington drew first blood at 9:57 of the first frame when Porter capitalized on a failed breakout and buried it past the goaltender. Indy came roaring back and at 16:44 the Fuel scored on an odd-man rush to tie the game 1-1. Bloomington had a chance to respond after it was awarded nearly two minutes of a 5-on-3 man-advantage in the final minutes, but the two teams headed to the locker rooms knotted up 1-1 despite Bloomington outshooting Indy 10-5.
The first half of the second frame was ruled by the goaltenders and the defense. Indy’s goaltender stopped all 6 shots faced in the first ten minutes while Bloomington’s suffocating defense didn’t allow the Fuel to record a shot on goal until 13:10. At 12:35 Raivis Ansons put the Bison back in front after circling the entire offensive zone and finishing the play on a net drive. Lee and Nikita Sedov assisted on the go-ahead goal. Bloomington would kill off a tripping penalty at the 13:23 mark and would take its 2-1 lead into the locker room along with a 19-12 shots-on-goal advantage.
The Bison added to their lead just 2:20 into the final frame. Porter found Milne on a two-on-one and while the initial shot was stopped, the puck changed direction, leading to the tally. Lee was credited with the secondary assist as Bloomington took a 3-1 lead. Indy responded nearly three minutes later and cut the lead back down to one goal. The Fuel seemed to tie the game at 14:34 but after a lengthy review, the goal was overturned due to goaltender interference. Bloomington faced a flurry of Indy shots after the Fuel had pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and Vladislav Kamenev punctuated the win with an empty-net goal.
Isaac Poulter improved his record to 4-0 in the crease and is now tied for the most wins by a goaltender in the ECHL. The Bison also set a team record by outshooting opponents in four-straight games and matched the team record with their win streak.
