BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Bloomington Bison Head Coach and VP of Hockey Operations Phillip Barski announced today the team has signed defenseman Brenden Datema to a standard player contract for the 2026-27 season.
Datema, 27, skated in 65 games for the Bison during the regular season and contributed 16 points (4g-12a) with a +19 rating. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Sterling Heights, Michigan native set career highs in all statistical categories during the 2025-26 season and added a goal and an assist in five playoff games.
The right-shot blueliner was originally acquired by the Bison from the Atlanta Gladiators on October 14, 2025. Datema played in 60 games with Atlanta and recorded nine points (2g-7a).
Prior to beginning his professional career, Datema played in 100 NCAA Division-I games and totaled 23 points (3g-20a) with Michigan Tech and Canisius College. During the 2022-23 season at Canisius, he helped the Golden Griffins clinch their second AHA Tournament title.
In Juniors, he played in 101 NAHL games and amassed 69 points (23g-46a). During the 2018-19 season Datema led all defensemen in goals, assists and points to earn defenseman of the year and first-team all-star honors.
